Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
Treatment
ABA is the treatment that is a scientific approach to understanding an indivdiual's behavior. The Board-Certified
Behavior Analyst (BCBA) would conduct an initial assessment to evaluate the skills, skills deficits, and behavior. Once the BCBA has completed the evaluation, they will write a treatment plan that would consist of "goals" to assist in teaching your child such as daily living skills, communications, motor skills and decreasing any maladaptive behaviors. We at Empowering Therapies are trained to provide behavior therapy, but more importantly empower our clients and families to live to their fullest potential independently.
According to the Center for Disease (CDC), ASD is a neurological and development disorder that affects how individuals engage with others, communications, fine and gross motor skills and other daily living skills. It is known as a "spectrum" disorder because of the variations in the type and severity of the symptoms the individuals may experience. Often individuals diagnsed with ASD have behavior excesses, restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, or any symptoms that may affect their ability in school, home, or work. Signs and symptoms tend to display between the ages of 2-3 years of age.
Some of the signs and symptms that an individual may display are repetiive language or movement, excess in behaviors, struggles engaging with others, etc. These are examples of the the signs and symptoms that an individual with ASD may present. To obtain a diagnosis, the individual needs to be evaluated by a licensed psychologist or a developmental pediatrician. The provider will conduct various assessments and observations to make a diagnosis. They will evaluate the individual's strenths and weakness. Once there's a diagnosis, you may be referred by your provider or insurance to receive treatment.
